Today I want to talk to you about guidance and leadership. The world needs mentors. Mentors are those who nurture the development of younger or less experienced people, whether family members, friends, colleagues or strangers who meet through a shared purpose. The role of a mentor is to gently guide mentorees towards a path that is opaque to the mentoree. While you can’t put an old head on young shoulders, you can lend one. Young people need guidance and leadership, through the motivation of helping the young person to develop. It is not about directive control or bossing the young person around, but rather helping them appreciate all of the elements of a particular course of action and helping them to make informed decisions, for their own development.
There is great richness for the mentor in doing this, both personally (in helping another human) and professionally (in passing down hard fought wisdom, as legacy).
